Why Adelaide Is One of Australia’s Best Cities to Live In

As Buyer Agents who live and work in Adelaide, we have the privilege of helping people find their perfect home every day. Whether we’re assisting local buyers looking for their next property, interstate families relocating for work or lifestyle, or expatriates returning to Australia, one thing consistently stands out. People fall in love with Adelaide.

Over the past few years, Adelaide has attracted increasing attention from buyers across Australia and overseas. Its combination of lifestyle, affordability, accessibility and natural beauty has made it one of the country’s most desirable places to live.

Recently, we asked our team members and clients a simple question:

What do you love most about Adelaide?

Their answers paint a wonderful picture of why so many people are choosing to call Adelaide home.

And whilst we expected a few common themes. We didn’t expect to accidentally start a city-versus-city debate. Beaches, wineries, food, architecture and lifestyle all received plenty of votes, but it was our Director, Katherine Skinner, who threw down the gauntlet with her bold claim that Adelaide has “the best coffee in the world. Yes, I said it.” We’re not saying Melburnians will agree, but we’re also not saying Katherine is wrong.

One thing became clear from every response. People who live here are genuinely passionate about the lifestyle this city offers, and it’s easy to see why more local buyers, interstate movers and expats are choosing to call Adelaide home.

A Lifestyle That Is Easy to Love

One of Adelaide’s greatest strengths is how effortlessly it combines city convenience with a relaxed lifestyle.

Our Director, Katherine Skinner, believes Adelaide offers a unique balance that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in larger capital cities.

“The tree-lined streets in the city fringe suburbs are home to some of the most beautiful character homes you’ll ever see. What makes them even better is the lifestyle that comes with them. Cafes, schools, restaurants, parks, cinemas and shops are often within walking distance.”

Many of of our most sought-after suburbs offer exactly this lifestyle. Areas such as North Adelaide, Unley, Parkside, Norwood and Prospect provide a village-like atmosphere while remaining close to the CBD.

Katherine also highlights one of Adelaide’s biggest advantages.

“You can go from the city to the beach in 20 to 30 minutes, even during peak-hour traffic. Working in real estate, accessibility to everything is something I truly value.”

For many interstate buyers arriving from Sydney or Melbourne, this is often one of the first things they notice. Less time commuting means more time enjoying family, friends and the lifestyle that Adelaide is famous for.

Beaches That Become Part of Everyday Life

Few cities can match Adelaide’s coastal lifestyle.

Mel Ramsey, one of our Property Managers, says spending time near the beach is one of her favourite things about living here.

“I love heading down to the beach with my kids, catching up with friends or taking my dog for a walk. It’s usually followed by brunch or coffee. Henley Square is my go-to spot and it’s only about 12 minutes from home.”

Adelaide’s coastline stretches for more than 70 kilometres, with popular destinations including Henley Beach, Glenelg, Brighton, Semaphore and Port Noarlunga.

For many residents, the beach isn’t something reserved for holidays. It’s part of everyday life.

Mel adds:

“Whether it’s starting the morning with a walk along the beach and a coffee in hand, or winding down with great food, a sunset drink and good company, there’s always something to enjoy. Being near the water is instantly relaxing and recharging.”

This easy access to the coast is one of the reasons so many people relocating from interstate choose Adelaide.

The Food Scene Continues to Impress

Food was one of the most common themes raised by our team.

Our Senior Buyer Agent, Kate Fuller summed it up perfectly:

“We’re so spoiled when it comes to food. Whether it’s the local family-run café that knows your name, the latest restaurant opening, the Adelaide Central Market or one of the many farmers’ markets, there’s something for every occasion, budget and taste.”

Adelaide has quietly built a reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting food destinations. The city’s multicultural influences, access to premium local produce and thriving hospitality industry have created an exceptional dining scene.

From hidden suburban cafés and artisan bakeries to award-winning restaurants, we offer a quality and diversity of food experiences that often surprises first-time visitors.

World-Class Wine Regions on Your Doorstep

One of our unique advantages is our proximity to some of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions.

Kate explains:

“Within a couple of hours of the city, you can visit so many award-winning wine regions. It really is a lifestyle city. You can spend the day exploring wineries, distilleries, local shops, cafés and family-friendly attractions.”

The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Langhorne Creek are all within easy reach. Whether you’re a serious wine enthusiast or simply enjoy a long lunch with friends, these regions offer endless opportunities for weekend adventures.

For many of our interstate and expatriate clients, this accessibility to premium food and wine experiences is a significant part of Adelaide’s appeal.

Beautiful Architecture and Character-Filled Streets

Adelaide’s architecture and streetscapes are another feature that our team values highly.

Kate’s appreciation for Adelaide’s architecture reflects what many property buyers discover when they begin exploring the city.

“The villas, bungalows, grand character homes, churches and heritage buildings create so much character, particularly in the CBD and North Adelaide. These are treasures we need to protect.”

Adelaide’s rich architectural heritage contributes significantly to its charm. From elegant sandstone villas and character cottages to leafy boulevards and historic main streets, many suburbs have retained a sense of identity and character that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

For buyers seeking homes with personality and history, Adelaide offers an abundance of choice.

A Fantastic Place to Raise a Family

For many of our clients, Adelaide offers the ideal mix for family-friendly living.

A defence family who relocated interstate with their young family, told us:

“Adelaide is a great city to raise kids in. The people in Adelaide are so friendly and more relaxed.”

They also highlighted some of the lifestyle benefits that families quickly embrace.

“The beaches, wineries, pubs and bakeries. What’s not to love?”

Lizzy and Josh, who returned to Adelaide from NSW with their 2 young children, shared a similar view:

“We love being back in Adelaide. Every weekend feels like an adventure. Whether it’s the beach, a winery or hiking in the hills, there’s always something to do.”

For families considering a move, Adelaide consistently ranks highly for liveability, education and community.

This sense of community is something we hear repeatedly from clients relocating from interstate. Adelaide often feels welcoming, approachable and easy to settle into, which can make a significant difference when moving to a new city.

For many buyers, we offer something increasingly rare. A capital city lifestyle without many of the compromises found in larger metropolitan markets. And unlike larger cities where travel times can dominate your day, Adelaide makes it easy to enjoy more of your free time.

Thinking About Relocating to Adelaide?

As local Buyer Agents who live and work in Adelaide, we understand that relocating can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re moving from interstate or overseas.

Our team helps local buyers, interstate families and expatriates navigate the local property market with confidence. We provide local insights, suburb expertise and independent advice to help buyers find not just the right property, but the right lifestyle.

If you’re considering making Adelaide your new home, we’d love to help you discover what so many of our clients, and our own team, already know:

That Adelaide is one of Australia’s best places to live. laughing
